I know, some of these are more medieval time-frame than fantasy, but most fantasy games tend to borrow heavily from it. Imagine that these guys are actually playing a D&D campaign (probably at the DMs house or something) and that the film is merely showing what they're doing. Hence the fates of the characters changing so quickly as someone buys the DM a pizza or something, off-screen.
